Apple Releases New Products - New iPods, Apple TV, iTunes
Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled a new set of Apple Inc. products, including an updated Apple TV that will make a play for cable and Netflix; an entire new line of iPods; and a refreshed version of iTunes on Sep 1st, 2010. Now let' s take a brief view on them.
iPod Touch, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle
In unveiling the new iPod touch, Jobs focused on its potential as a handheld gaming device, boasting that the device "outsells the Nintendo and Sony portable game players combined" with 50 percent of the market for such devices worldwide.
The new iPod Touch comes with a thinner design, the same Retina-screen technology used in the iPhone 4 and is powered by Apple's own A4 chip. The new iPod Touch also has two cameras – including a front facing camera and microphone, meaning users can now take advantage of the FaceTime video conferencing feature. This is the same feature available on the iPhone 4. The rear-facing video camera can be used for HD video recording.
The new iPod Nano has been given a complete redesign. The gadget is now a mini-touchscreen with no buttons at all, except for two volume switches and a sleep/wake button. Although the gadget mimics the iOS platform, it actually uses a separate system, meaning users won't be able to use new versions of apps. Instead, they will be able to access all the normal iPad Nano features like playlists, Genius mixes, etc. Apple also claims the battery will last for 24 hours.
The new iPad Nano also comes with an FM tuner, but has lost the camera available in the previous version.
The super-small iPod Shuffle now includes buttons, VoiceOver song identification, 15 hours of playback, and two gigabytes of storage for $49. The Nano has traded its clickwheel for a multi-touch interface, allowing the device to be 46 percent smaller and 42 percent lighter, with 24-hour audio playback. The eight-gigabyte Nano will sell for $149, with the 16-gigabyte fetching $179.
Apple TV
The new Apple TV is a small box, just 1/4 the size of the previous model. The new product comes equipped with an HDMI port, a power supply built in it, an optical audio port, an Ethernet jack, and built-in Wi-Fi.
"It's silent, cool and tiny," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs, while unveiling the diminutive metallic box. Rumors were strong that Apple will re-brand its TV as "iTV", but Jobs did not do the same. The Apple boss did not reveal whether it was running a version of iOS. The new interface of the Apple TV however, includes some very iOS-like touches.
iTunes 10 (Introducing Ping)
The new iTunes 10 has many new features, by far the biggest is Apple's new social network, Ping. Facebook and Twitter meet itunes. Follow your favorite artists and friends. Find out what they are listening and downloading. Custom chart of what the people you follow are downloading. Uses Lady GaGa as an example.
New hybrid view for albums. Big focus on discovery. How do you find new songs with 12 million songs in store. What are my friends listening to? How do I tell my friends what I like.
iOS 4.1
The newest version, 4.01, will be available next week and will fix a glitch in the iPhone 4 involving the proximity sensor (but not the much-maligned antenna that can encounter signal problems from a user's touch).
The next iOS version, 4.2, which is intended to make the iPad's applications run more like those of the iPhone, is just around the corner in November. That update will also include a feature called AirPlay that allows users to send media to other devices via Wi-Fi. Jobs said Apple customers are downloading 200 apps every second.
What's more, Apple raises the game. This time, it's in thinking of their products as paper boats in a steadily flowing river that's the Apple brand, rather than weighty nuggets of brilliance that just sink to the bottom. The new line proves how successful they've been at hewing to that vision.
So many products will release and what we see is that Apple is making great progress on technical revolutions. Steve Jobs also showed new opened Apple shops in Shanghai, Paris.
